Grande Ronde Guided Steelhead Fly Fishing Trips
Guided or supported steelhead fly fishing trips on the Grande Ronde River
Tired of combat fishing for steelhead on the lower Grande Ronde River? Want to fish for steelhead in a beautiful setting with some elbow room? Or perhaps you have been a trout fisherman for years and want to learn how to catch those elusive steelhead? Want to fish with a Grande Ronde steelhead guide who knows the river intimately and doesn't simply do a few trips per year on the "Ronde"? If so a guided steelhead trip with Grant Richie and Richie Outfitters might be in your future. We start at Minam and float for 39 miles through a scenic canyon with access available only by boat. About 37 of those miles are roadless which makes for a uniquely memorable steelhead trip. Bald eagles are often in sight as you work your flies through unspoiled runs on the Grande Ronde River. Black bears, water fowl, mink, river otter, elk, deer, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep are viewed along the river's edge and canyon walls as we glide down the river.
Our guided steelhead trips make use of fishing frame rafts with two clients per raft so you have plenty of room to fish while we row through the unpressured waters of the upper Grande Ronde River. We will stop to walk and wade fish the best runs. In the evenings we will pull in to camp already prepared by one of our guides. Everything is provided other than your personal gear. If you are new to steelhead fishing and need help with gear, it's no problem. Let us know what you need and we can take care of you.
Unlike many Grande Ronde steelhead guides, the upper Grande Ronde River is our home. We don't come here for one month out of the year, we live and fish here year round which gives us an intimate understanding of its waters and fish.

When is the best time to fish for steelhead on the Grande Ronde?
Early steelhead season, late September through mid October:
The earliest trips begin in September and are designed for the trout fisherman who also wants to have a good chance at hooking into the first steelhead of the season. On these trips the weather is typically warmer and the days longer. Fishing the best water this time of year yields good to excellent trout fishing for fat, large, hard fighting resident rainbows (often in the 16"-21" range but occasionally up to 26"!), the earliest and hottest steelhead (lots of jumping and long runs so be sure to have plenty of backing on your reel), and fantastic scenery. This is one of my favorite times of year to float. Days will be filled with countless bald eagle and black bear sightings, and big resident rainbows. As we get closer to mid October, we begin to catch fewer trout and more steelhead. To see what a trip this time of year yields for fish and scenery please look at this photo slideshow.

Prime Steelhead Season, mid October through mid November:
With each passing week in October the days get shorter, the temperatures colder, and more steelhead fill the river. This is a beautiful time of year to be on the river as fall colors take over and steelhead become more abundant. This is also primetime for steelhead action on our section of the Grande Ronde offering the best balance between good weather and fish numbers.
