Grande Ronde Guided Fly Fishing Trips for Large Trout on the Roadless Section of the Wallowa River and Grande Ronde River
There are 5 excellent reasons to go on a guided fly fishing trip for trout on the roadless section of the Wallowa and Grande Ronde rivers:
#1 Large Rainbows
#2 Big Rainbows
#3 Fat Rainbows
#4 Very Fat Rainbows
#5 Super Fat Rainbows
If you need more reasons to book a guided trip there is great scenery with plenty of elbow room:
Great sunsets to watch from camp,
And a great camp experience.
Combine all of the above with top of the line rafting, fishing, and camping equipment throw in great food and good company and you are out of reasons not to book a guided fly fishing trip down the roadless Wallowa and Grande Ronde Rivers.
What to expect:
We are the only guide business that lives and guides on the Wallowa and Grande Ronde year round giving us an intimate knowledge of the river and its fish. You will be taken down the river by someone who truly knows the river well. During the day we will fish the best runs and pools of the river from the raft and by foot. At the end of each day we will pull into camp that is already set by another one of our guides. We believe great food and good company is best after a good day on the water. We are not a hamburger, hotdog, and store bought potato salad type of outfit. We strive to make each meal memorable in its own right. You will enjoy roomy tents, cots, and extra thick sleeping pads. We provide everything for you other than your personal gear and personal beverages (we provide coffee, tea, juice, water). After a hot breakfast in the morning we will begin our daily pursuit of trout and steelhead while one of our guides packs up camp and moves it down the river.
Trips are limited to 8 clients (2 fly fisherman per raft) to preserve plenty of casting space and elbow room. You can either come as an individual and join one of our pre-planned trips or come as a group and customize the dates to fit your schedule.
When should you book a trip?
We begin our multi-day trips through the roadless section in the second half of June to take advantage of the prolific stonefly hatch. If you enjoy fishing big dry flies to large, wild trout think about fishing the last two weeks of June into the first week of July. The second half of June is always hard to predict for weather and streamflow. This is a wild undammed river so we can get high flows in June depending on the snowpack. The weather is typically very good in June, but we can get the occasional heavy rain storm this time of year.
The first 3 weeks of July normally sees warm to hot weather with moderate to lower flows and less chance of rain. Fish will begin to respond less to dry flies mid-day through this time of year and we find more success fishing streamers and nymphs especially if you are looking to catch "The Big One!"
We give the fish a break in the roadless section during the month of August but have day day trips available starting from Minam.
As September comes the temperatures start to cool off, October Caddis begin hatching in earnest down the roadless section of the Grande Ronde and the fishing for large resident rainbows and the first steelhead of the season heats up. Starting the second week of September through early October is primetime for beautiful weather, low flows which means it is highly unlikely we will see anyone else on the water, beautiful fall colors, and hot fishing for big resident rainbows and early steelhead that like to make your reels scream.
For those that want a trip primarily focused on steelhead, think about a trip starting mid October through mid November. Check out our Grande Ronde guided steelhead trips page for more information about steelhead trips.
